And George had a treaure for me: photographs of the house that had stood there (from ~1900) and of George Washington Eubank and his wife Ella late in life (from ~1929).

graveGeorge called me a few weeks after his visit. He told me with excitement that he had learned that John was interred in the Confederate section of Lynchburg's Old City Cemetery. We planned a trip to the grave together, but sadly, he passed away before we could make the trip.

I did visit John's grave in 2012 with my mother, a historian. The burial records are certain in this case -- it's brother John, although the inscription is a bit muddled (with Civil War graves) Following the tradition in several cultures, I left a small stone on his grave -- an actual stone from his chimney.

graveBut James lies unmarked in a mass grave at Blandford Cemetery in Petersburg. We visited there in 2021 and the best I could do was leave a small stone from his chimney on the Virginia memorial.
